If you don’t have a blender, skip this step. Mix the blended sugar with ½ cup (110g) of vegan butter on a fast speed using a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment for 2-3 minutes. Stop the mixer, scrape the sides with a baking spatula, and turn the mixer back on again for another 2-3 minutes. If you don’t have a stand mixer, you can use a handheld electric mixer or mix by hand. If you mix by hand, you might want to do it while you watch tv or something because it will take awhile. You’ll know this step is done when the consistency of the butter and sugar are light and fluffy. Add ¾ teaspoons (3g) of vanilla and 2 ½ tablespoons (37g) nondairy milk to the butter and sugar, and mix again for 1 minute. Sift ½ tablespoon (4-5g) organic cornstarch, ⅛ teaspoon sea salt, ¼ teaspoon (1g) baking soda, ½ tablespoon (7g) baking powder, 1 ¼ cups (162g) flour, ¼ cup (30g) cocoa powder, and 2 tablespoons (10g) black cocoa powder into the mixing bowl. Attach the pouring shield (or cover the mixer with a kitchen towel if you don’t have the shield). Mix on low-medium speed for 1 minute. Stop the mixer, scrape the sides (and bottom) of the mixing bowl with a baking spatula, and mix again. Wrap the black cookie dough in 1-2 pieces of cling wrap or 1-2 plastic produce bags. Flatten the dough into 1-2 thin discs so they chill faster and more thoroughly. Chill the dough for a minimum of 30 minutes in the freezer (or overnight in the fridge). This recipe works best if the dough is chilled for 24 hours in the fridge. The dough will roll the smoothest if it chills longer. Preheat the oven to 350ºF (175ºC). Remove the dough from the fridge or freezer, and unwrap it. Sandwich the dough in between 2 pieces of parchment paper or 2 silicone rolling mats. Roll the dough by rolling your rolling pin on top of the top piece of parchment paper or silicone rolling mat. I rolled mine ¼ inch (6mm) thick. If your rolling pin doesn’t have a way to measure the thickness, get a new one. Just kidding. You can set 2 metal straws on either side of your dough and roll on the pencils. They will keep you from rolling your dough too thinly. Peel the top layer of parchment paper or the top silicone mat carefully off of the rolled out dough. If a little bit of cookie dough sticks to the top layer when you peel it off, this just means that your dough is too warm. Your cookies will still taste great. If you want a very smooth cookie, chill your cookie dough longer. Press your heart-shaped cookie cutter into the dough, as close to the edges as possible. Transfer the cookie cutouts by slipping your parchment paper or rolling mat onto a cutting board or tray and transferring them to the freezer. Freeze the cookies for at least 10 minutes. This will make them strong enough for you to transfer them off of your rolling surface onto baking sheets without breaking them. At this point in the process, it’s been 6 minutes since I started preheating my oven. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Rewrap any remaining cookie dough scraps that you might have leftover from rolling that batch, and place it in the freezer to continue chilling. Remove the black cocoa cookies from the freezer after 10 minutes (you can leave them in longer if you have time). Transfer the cookies (carefully) to the parchment-lined cookie sheets. I do this by folding my rolling mat in a way that looks like I’m peeling it off of the bottoms of the cookies. Leave a little space between each cookie for them to expand a bit when they bake. This step of transferring cookies to the baking sheet takes about 2 minutes. Slide the cookie sheet (or cookie sheets if you filled more than one) into the oven, once it’s preheated to 350ºF (175ºC). Bake for 9-10 minutes in a 350ºF (175ºC) oven. Gather all the dough scraps and combine them with the dough that’s wrapped in the freezer. Repeat all the steps again: roll, stamp, chill, transfer, bake. Remove the tray(s) of baked cookies from the oven when your timer goes off. Let the black cocoa cookies sit on the cookie sheet for 2-3 minutes before you transfer them to a cooling rack. Trace the outline of a heart on your first heart cookie using this decorating icing. Draw a smaller heart on the inside of the cookie. Draw lines connecting the smaller inner heart to the larger outer heart. Draw the curved lines connecting the straight lines, just like a spider web. Repeat this design on all the black cocoa cookies. Dry the cookie icing by leaving the spider web cookies on the counter overnight (or for a minimum of 5 hours).

Thursday, May 29, 2014 Gardening 101 “Gardening” can be intimidating. Regardless of where you are in the process, there is always room for improvement. The great thing about gardening is that you can make mistakes, learn from those mistakes, and still enjoy the process. It’s probably a fine time to emphasize that this is true of cultivating our own lives as well as cultivating plants and flowers. This might begin to read a bit cheesy but if you’ve ever been lost, you know what I mean. We have to keep tilling, seeding, fertilizing, mulching, weeding and pruning. Unless you have an exotic rose bush, this might seem easy to do as an experienced gardener of which I am not. I learned, as many gardeners do, through trial and error. Believe me; I have made my share of mistakes. Here are a few tips that I have found to be helpful. Take care of your investment—YOU! If you’re not in a good place, get out. And for goodness sake, find a good therapist. I can’t emphasize this enough. Don’t underestimate talk therapy. Rediscovering yourself takes time and a good therapist will only encourage you to be the best version of you. Just as plants need space to grow, so do you. Space can be physical (an apartment, a house, a room! Virginia Woolf wrote an entire essay on this. Sandra Cisneros wrote a beautiful poem “A House Of My Own”) or it can be symbolic space (a journal, a block of time to go for a walk, a therapist’s office!). As my life changed, I left a house and land to move into a small apartment. This is where I started gardening in pots. I knew nothing about gardening so the first plant I picked, I picked from what I affectionately call “the death and dying” section also known as the discount plants section. The plant I picked up was colorful but creepy. I learned it was a bromeliad, a tropical plant which I wasn’t actually aware of at the time. It turns out that bromeliads are “undemanding and easy to grow” a quick Google search tells me. I don’t recall searching for any care instructions at the time. I decided to wing it (the opposite of how I typically approach my life). I loved the bloom. What I didn’t realize is that bromeliadsbloom a single time… then they die. Great. Sigh. But wait! I did a bit of research and knew to look forward to “pups”, growing buds at the base of the leaves. These pups are ready to be separated when they are about half the size of the mother plant and should be removed by cutting with a sharp knife or clippers as close to the mother plant as possible. I had no idea that I would be performing surgery. Nevertheless, I ended up with three pups after the mother passed away. I would be lying if I wrote that this didn’t break my heart but with the pups came new flowers and new pups; and, all Goths know that Death is part of Life. Not all plants require the same amount of fertilizer or water. I learned that I’m a “slow processor” so when I am hurt or upset, it takes me quite a while to understand why. Pay attention to your climate. The USDA Hardiness Zone Map divides North America into 11 separate zones with each zone being 10°F warmer (or colder) than the adjacent zone. I require a great deal of indirect sunlight. I lived in Massachusetts for a while and could not hack it. It was overcast and dreary. My little Goth heart needs sunlight… just not direct sunlight. I always use a parasol when I go for walks which I enjoy doing in town to look at the various Victorian style homes and in my favorite garden cemetery, Hollywood Cemetery. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2011 DIY Gothy Hair Bows in Two Easy Steps I decided I wanted a hair bow with trailing ribbons, maybe due to memories of the braided ribbon barrettes that were THE thing when I was a little girl. The first bow I made was so easy that I made another.. and another... and another... They are really fun to make. :-) Step one: Make a bow with fabric, lace or wide ribbon. This can be done by cutting the material to your desired size and then folding or squishing it together in the middle. Tie the middle with a piece of thin ribbon, leaving plenty of extra ribbon hanging. Step two: Tie the bow to the barrette. Do this by running the thin ribbon under the metal arc on the back of the barrette and tying in tight knots. You can then leave the ribbons trailing or cut them. I like to add a drop of hot glue over the knots for extra security. Note: Before tying, consider if you want the barrette to open on the left or right. One option will be easier for you, depending on how you wear the bow and whether you're right- or left-handed. For a pair of bows to wear on either side of your head, I suggest making one with the barrette opening on the left and one opening on the right. If you want a simple bow, you are done! Thursday 28 December 2017 Black Poison Candy Apples DIY Christmas is over, but it's still the season for sweets, if there's ever actually a time that it isn't. I've long wanted to have a go at making black candy apples. I don't recall ever making ordinary candy apples, so this was a bit of an experiment. I'm not sure it went all that well :p No doubt you can do a better job! But it was fun and I do feel inspired to try other kinds of candy apples in future. So, I wouldn't exactly call this a recipe, but here are the ingredients and method I used this time around... Ingredients: 3 cups sugar 1/2 cup corn syrup (I used caramel sugar syrup) 3/4 cup water Apples Black gel food dye The plastic straws I used are the ones that normally come with these completely awesome skull drinking glasses. I found this amount probably enough to coat 6 apples. Method: 1. Wash and dry your apples, and remove the stems. Stick the straws or sticks firmly into the dimple. 2. Combine all ingredients into a pot, heat on medium high until boiling. 3. Let boil, stirring intermittently, for 20 minutes. If you have a candy thermometer, your liquid candy should reach 300˚F, the "hard crack stage". 4. Remove the pot from heat, and let it cool slightly. Roll the apples in the liquid candy, and place onto a sheet of non-stick baking paper. 5. I would suggest perhaps refrigeration afterwards to help them set and stay hard.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 24, 2011 Paint It Black "Paint it black" is probably the most fundamental tenet of gothic decorating on a budget. I recently went thrifting and found several items that could be transformed into treasures with a coat of paint. Behold the loot: Rust-Oleum Universal - Metallic - Satin Nickel ($6): I found the handle/spray button clunky and a little awkward. It was more like an atomizer, with the spray forming a cloud rather than hitting the object. Cap accurately represents the color. Final result looks good. Sometimes a goth needs a little shiny silver. :) ColorPlace - Black Satin: To be blunt, this stuff is crap. Terrible coverage and the spray button spit out droplets. I think I paid two bucks; not worth it. Krylon Indoor/Outdoor- Black Satin ($3.25): Rotating spray button is a little odd; I didn't find any advantage in rotating it. Good coverage. Dries very quickly. Does not play well with plastic (but it doesn't purport to be for plastic). Rust-Oleum - Black Satin ($4.75): I liked the wide spray button; easy to aim. Excellent coverage. Dries more slowly than Krylon. I would choose this over Krylon unless I was in a major hurry. Rust-Oleum - Hammered - Black ($5.75): Great for giving a wrought iron look. Good coverage. Spray button will spit droplets if you don't shake the can frequently. Cap accurately represents the color and texture. Final result looks good. Minwax Fast-Drying Polyurethane - Clear Satin ($7.50): Good stuff. I like it better than brush-on polyurethane because if sprayed properly, it gives an extremely smooth finish. Rust-Oleum Painters' Touch - Primer and Satin Black (not shown) ($3.75): Highly recommended. Wide spray button is comfy and easy to aim. Best coverage of any paint I tried. Rust-Oleum Painters' Touch - Metallic - Aluminum ($3.75): I like this MUCH better than the Universal metallic. The aluminum color is super shiny; I used it for coverage and then toned it down with a light coat of the Universal Satin Nickel. In summary: Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch will be my first choice in the future. Krylon would be a good second choice. Posted by J.Bane

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2011 Easy and Inexpensive DIY Jewelry Display With this simple and inexpensive project, you can put your jewelry on display to enjoy every day. Cost: $5-15 Materials needed: picture frame velvet or other fabric cork tile cardboard duct tape scissors utility knife ruler or measuring tape stapler {optional} Your picture frame can be any size but needs to have enough depth to accommodate the cork and cardboard. No glass is needed. I used an 11" x 14" frame. You can use any opaque fabric of your choice. Black velvet makes an especially lovely backdrop for silver jewelry. I used pieces of a $4 velvet skirt from a thrift store. Cork tiles and rolls are sold in various sizes online and at many craft and office supply stores. A package of four 12" x 12" tiles costs about $10. Begin by cutting your cork tile and your cardboard to the proper size to fit into the back of your frame. If you have glass from the frame, you can use it as a template. I like to use a utility knife and ruler; scissors will also work. Cover the tile with fabric by placing the fabric right side down, placing the cork on top, and wrapping the fabric around to the back of the cork. Trim the fabric as needed; secure with staples or tape. Place the fabric-covered cork face down into the back of the frame, then place the cardboard on top of the cork. Secure with duct tape. Turn frame over to reveal your completed project! Use pins to hang your jewelry on the display.

5 Beautiful Gothic movies to watch this Halloween SEPTEMBER 30, 2014 / Z. Halloween, even in its earliest stages, is inherently Gothic. The Gothic tradition is full of collisions between the dead and living, the past and present, the natural and supernatural. Here are just a few Gothic films touch on these themes, and will set the mood for a haunting and beautiful Halloween! The Innocents (1961). Based on Henry James’ 1898 novel The Turn of the Screw, this film is enthralling, beautifully shot, and delightfully creepy. The story follows a young governess stationed in a large Gothic estate, charged with looking after two children. While the kids start acting increasingly strange, she starts to see mysterious figures of a man and a woman throughout the grounds of the estate. The Innocents really is a must-see, though you won’t be able to get a certain melody out of your head after watching it… Häxan: Witchcraft through the ages (1926). Admittedly, I have a soft spot for 1920’s cinema, but even those of you who find silent film boring will be shocked by this one. Häxan is a quasi-documentary on the history of witchcraft, with elaborate reenactments set during various points in history. Not surprisingly, most of the film focuses in Europe in the middle ages, and there is some amazing imagery in these scenes. If nothing else, make sure you watch the unforgettable “Black Sabbath” scene. Rebecca (1940). “Last Night I dreamed I was at Manderly again”… Rebecca is a subtle chiller from Hitchcock that hits on all the major Gothic tropes: an old, creepy mansion on a cliff, a fair maiden inhabiting said mansion, recently married to a man who grows increasingly frightening, an evil housekeeper, a vengeful spirit that just won’t go away… you get the picture. Within the walls of the Manderly estate, the lines between the supernatural, bitter reality, and psychological breakdowns are masterfully blurred, making this a true classic in the Gothic genre. Fall of the House of Usher (1926). There have been several film adaptations of Poe’s short story, but Epstein’s is the dreamiest, in my opinion. Beautiful, surreal shots through haunting bogs and cathedral like mansions are my cup of tea. The combination of the visuals with the eerie, melancholic Medieval-sounding score is perfect. The Woman in Black (2012). Though this is a recent horror film, its pacing and visuals are reminiscent of some of the the older films on this list. It’s a classical Victorian ghost story that’s beautiful to look at and is genuinely creepy—if you can get over the fact that Harry Potter’s in it and he has a son! I hope you find a film or two on this list to be intriguing, if you have a favorite beautiful Gothic chiller you like watching around Halloween time!

Topics in Literature: The Literary Gothic The Sandman In the graphic novel, The Sandman by Neil Gaiman, the creepiest visual was the scene in “Dream a Little Dream of Me”. The scene was when Constantine and Dream found Rachel and Dream’s bag of sand, and her decaying and dying body. This was so creepy because here was a naked women who was moderately young, literally decaying before their eyes. She was dying because of the dreams. Constantine already had lost the women he loved but now he was witnessing her die painfully. It’s hard to watch someone they love die, especially in this horrible way. The creepiest idea developed in this chapter was the idea that Rachel was stuck in her dreams/nightmares and because it’s so unhealthy to always dream it was the cause of her death. Typically people think of dreams as a way to work through what your subconscious thoughts and to resolve our conflicts. According to our class lecture, Freud said that “dreams are unconscious and its the realm of repressed desires”. The complete opposite is happening in this chapter. When reading a graphic novel, especially a gothic novel, it’s almost easier to see how the story is actually gothic. You can visually see decaying buildings and bodies, you see the night time, you see the character’s struggle and emotions. It makes it easier to understand, knowing the typical gothic tropes, and visually seeing while reading. It takes away a bit of the readers imagination but it provides something in its place. This story is more than just horror. As mentioned earlier it shows the readers the gothic tropes. In “Dream a Little Dream of Me” you see human guts all over the wall, you see death and decay, you see the death of a loved one, you see the night time, you see Dream’s creepy not humanlike eyes, you see insane mentality. Easiest Candle Making Technique Ever! Posted by 💀MV on AUGUST 27, 2011 I love, love, love making candles! It’s one of the funnest and easiest crafts that I know of. I mean, how can you go wrong? Just melt a bit of candle wax, position your wick, add whatever colors or scents you like (crayons and essential oils or even perfume will work just fine), pour the whole thing together, and wait ’til it’s firm. I’ve been making my own candles since the 1990s and just love the entire process. It makes me feel so creative and clever to use up my leftover waxes this way! I also get the added satisfaction of knowing that my candle is unique; no one has quite the same color or scent that I do! That said, pouring candles can be a real pain in the ass if you don’t get it right. The wax can form ugly lumps and bumps, you can find bubbles inside that compromise the burning smoothness, and sometimes the best-laid shapes will go awry. And long, skinny candles — well, forget pouring those! Dipping takes too long (though admittedly, I have not tried it very thoroughly: maybe I’ll do it sometime). If you’re a first-timer or you’re in the market for an easy candle project, you can buy yourself some rolls of beeswax at your local craft store. They also come in candle-making kits that couldn’t be simpler. Place your wick on one side of the wax sheet, roll it up, and Bob’s your uncle. It’s lovely and takes only a few minutes. In the same spirit as the roll-your-own-beeswax candle, I have created a terribly easy candle recipe that would make any star of the most recent episode of “Hoarders” stand and applaud vigorously. 😉 INGREDIENTS: * Something for a wick (natural fiber string, rope, kitchen string, or buy yourself some commercial wick from the craft store.) * One bag of your favorite wax-covered Laughing Cow cheese. (Bonbel and Babybel Light use red wax, and their Cheddar variety is coated in yellow wax.) These candles are romantic and decadent, not at all cheesy! Available in classic Babybel, or Cheddar. Step 1. Eat the cheese as you normally would, storing up all of the awesome wax! Resist the urge to play with the wax… it’s hard, but you need to restrain yourself. Pick the wax apart so that it’s in half-circles or anything flat. Step 2. [If you’re very about germs: wash the wax in cold, slightly soapy water. Soak for a bit, rinse, then allow to air dry undisturbed over the course of a few days. If you don’t care about getting cheese particles in your candle — and trust me, it’s not all that much anyway — read on…] Step 3. Cut your wax into strips and wind it around your wick. After you’ve made a nice long, tall strip, wind more wax strips around your first coat. (It is this step where you can rub a bit of scented oil over your wax strips if you like — I did roses on mine, and now they smell like roses dipped in cheese.) Step 4. Repeat until all of your wax is gone, or your candle is sized and shaped the way you want it. Step 5. Put in a candleholder (or a glass filled with pretty stones, as shown) and light, enjoying the dark romantic ambience of your super-easy craft!

Tuesday, October 11, 2011 Easy and Inexpensive DIY Jewelry Display With this simple and inexpensive project, you can put your jewelry on display to enjoy every day. Cost: $5-15 Materials needed: picture frame velvet or other fabric cork tile cardboard duct tape scissors utility knife ruler or measuring tape stapler (optional) Your picture frame can be any size but needs to have enough depth to accommodate the cork and cardboard. No glass is needed. I used an 11" x 14" frame. You can use any opaque fabric of your choice. Black velvet makes an especially lovely backdrop for silver jewelry. I used pieces of a $4 velvet skirt from a thrift store. Cork tiles and rolls are sold in various sizes online and at many craft and office supply stores. A package of four 12" x 12" tiles costs about $10. Begin by cutting your cork tile and your cardboard to the proper size to fit into the back of your frame. If you have glass from the frame, you can use it as a template. I like to use a utility knife and ruler; scissors will also work. Cover the tile with fabric by placing the fabric right side down, placing the cork on top, and wrapping the fabric around to the back of the cork. Trim the fabric as needed; secure with staples or tape. Place the fabric-covered cork face down into the back of the frame, then place the cardboard on top of the cork. Secure with duct tape. Turn frame over to reveal your completed project! Use pins to hang your jewelry on the display.

Tuesday, October 25, 2016 Laundry Closet: Hanger Holder With my laundry closet makeover, I needed somewhere to keep clothes hangers handy. I considered several options. Hooks could hang on the wall next to the dryer, right where I needed them.. but hooks wouldn't hold many hangers. What I really needed was something that would hang on the wall like a hook, but would stick straight out instead of curving. It needed to be fairly short; long enough to hold several hangers, but short enough to be out of the way. And of utmost importance, it needed to be not sharp on the end... because I would definitely poke my clumsy self. ;) I wandered around the home improvement store, trying to come up with a solution, when I spotted something that would be perfect. A door stop. :D It was just the right length, and the rubber end cap would serve a dual function of keeping the hangers from sliding off and preventing me from stabbing myself or poking an eye out. As with most of my projects, I spray painted the little guys black and added bats. :D The bats are wooden shapes from the craft store. Secretly following him around the corner, I saw him break it into small pieces and share it with his whole class of 20. Sharing the little he had GMH.

Sunday 17 April 2022 Black Widow Spider Truffles What's more appetising, I ask you, than biting into a huge fat venomous spider? And which deadly spider is more instantly familiar than our cannibalistic friend the black widow? God they're creepy aren't they. Even looking at this photo below gives me the creepy crawlies. Anyway, I long thought it would be a fun idea to make chocolate truffles decorated to look like spiders. They'd make a nice addition to a spooky afternoon tea, a Halloween party, a children's party, or just whenever you feel like baking spooky sweets. This was fairly time consuming, but the hardest part was tracing around the spider stencils and cutting them out. If you're more artistically talented than I, you might want to draw spider shapes straight onto the black card instead of printing out an image. This recipe yielded enough for about 10 of my fairly large ones, but you can make them any size you like. Ingredients: 100g unsalted butter 100g dark chocolate 1tsp cocoa 1 cup icing sugar + Cherries (morello, glacé, etc.) Rum, rum essence, or vanilla essence Black fondant Red fondant For spider bases: Black card stock (fairly stiff, not paper) Cardboard Glue Pencil Scissors Bases Method: Print out the image at the bottom of this post. Glue image into cardboard. Cut around the image carefully to create a stencil. Hold the stencil onto the black card stock and (this part is particularly fiddly) trace around it with a pencil. Cut out your spiders! Arrange them on a plate or pretty tray. Truffle Method: In a pot, melt together the butter and chocolate on the stove, slowly stirring til combined. Add half a cup of icing sugar, the cocoa, and the rum or vanilla essence. Stir, then add more icing sugar until the mixture is stiff and firm. 1 cup of icing sugar wasn't enough, so I added another half a cup, and a bit more cocoa for luck. Let cool til it's comfortable to handle. Using the spider stencil as a guide for how large the truffle should be, roll some mixture into a rough ball. Mush a cherry (or two) into it, then roll the mixture around in your hands until it's pleasingly round. Place on a plate, it doesn't matter if the bottom flattens. Repeat for as many truffles as you want, then put them in the fridge to chill for a couple of hours. Flatten out the black fondant as thinly as you can, you only want it a few millimetres thick. Lay the fondant over each truffle, and roll it in your hands until the whole truffle is covered. It doesn't matter if the underside is bare or untidy. Flatten out some red fondant, and using a sharp knife (xacto knife or non-serrated kitchen knife) carefully cut out hourglass shapes. Gently place the red hourglasses onto each truffle and pat to smoothen them down so they'll stay in place but not lose their shape. Put each truffle onto the black card spider base. Serve!
