Brooch and earring holder by Natalie of Gothy Two Shoes Monday, May 22, 2017 DIY Brooch and Earring Frame Holder Whilst I had my staple gun out I decided to tackle another project. I was going to make a brooch and earring holder out of a frame and some lace. I got this wooden frame from an Op Shop and I spray painted it black. I liked this frame because it had a lip on the inner part, I was going to use this as a base to staple my lace. I also didn't want the backings of my accessories to scratch the wall, so I think the base helped with this. Standard stretchy lace from the fabric stash. I roughly cut it out. It didn't have to be perfect, especially because it's stretchy. I started folding and stapling it into place. I did a LOT of stretching, as I didn't want my heavy accessories to drag the fabric down. I only realised after that my staples were too big and some of the wood was being damaged! Eek!! I'm not a fussy person though, so I just used black paint to hide them :) I love that I can see all my brooch and earring options! Of course, this frame wasn't big enough for my whole collection ;) I used these 3M velcro type picture stips to hang it. This means I can take the frame off to get to my accessories. Tuesday, October 25, 2016 Laundry Closet: Hanger Holder With my laundry closet makeover, I needed somewhere to keep clothes hangers handy. I considered several options. Hooks could hang on the wall next to the dryer, right where I needed them.. but hooks wouldn't hold many hangers. What I really needed was something that would hang on the wall like a hook, but would stick straight out instead of curving. It needed to be fairly short; long enough to hold several hangers, but short enough to be out of the way. And of utmost importance, it needed to be not sharp on the end... because I would definitely poke my clumsy self. ;) I wandered around the home improvement store, trying to come up with a solution, when I spotted something that would be perfect. A door stop. :D It was just the right length, and the rubber end cap would serve a dual function of keeping the hangers from sliding off and preventing me from stabbing myself or poking an eye out. As with most of my projects, I spray painted the little guys black and added bats. :D The bats are wooden shapes from the craft store. I spaced them out appropriately on the wall... and they work perfectly. :D Laundry Closet: Hanger Holder

Tuesday, October 11, 2011 Easy and Inexpensive DIY Jewelry Display With this simple and inexpensive project, you can put your jewelry on display to enjoy every day. Cost: $5-15 Materials needed: picture frame velvet or other fabric cork tile cardboard duct tape scissors utility knife ruler or measuring tape stapler (optional) Your picture frame can be any size but needs to have enough depth to accommodate the cork and cardboard. No glass is needed. I used an 11" x 14" frame. You can use any opaque fabric of your choice. Black velvet makes an especially lovely backdrop for silver jewelry. I used pieces of a $4 velvet skirt from a thrift store. Cork tiles and rolls are sold in various sizes online and at many craft and office supply stores. A package of four 12" x 12" tiles costs about $10. Begin by cutting your cork tile and your cardboard to the proper size to fit into the back of your frame. If you have glass from the frame, you can use it as a template. I like to use a utility knife and ruler; scissors will also work. Cover the tile with fabric by placing the fabric right side down, placing the cork on top, and wrapping the fabric around to the back of the cork. Trim the fabric as needed; secure with staples or tape. Place the fabric-covered cork face down into the back of the frame, then place the cardboard on top of the cork. Secure with duct tape. Turn frame over to reveal your completed project! Use pins to hang your jewelry on the display.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2011 Stripey, Batty Chest of Drawers I love to rescue old furniture and give it new life with paint. With craft stores full of stencils and so forth, one does not need to be a Monet to create a fun piece of furniture. I'm sure the artists on etsy would scoff at me, but I am happy with the results (and that's all that matters). First, I sanded it a little to smooth out the nicks and dings, then applied a coat of latex primer. Primer helps the paint stick; this is especially important if you have not stripped the furniture down to the bare wood. Then I painted the drawer fronts and the sides of the chest black and the front and top of the chest white. I used Behr interior latex paint, the same stuff I use on my walls. After the paint was thoroughly dry, I masked off stripes using 1" painters tape. To make crisp stripes, I highly recommend spending a couple extra dollars for FrogTape instead of regular blue painters tape. The paint seeps underneath FrogTape much less, especially if you're careful to rub the edges down well. I then painted white over the unmasked areas. It might seem counter-intuitive to paint white over black, but with latex paints, lighter colors cover better. To dress up the drawer fronts, I decided to add bats behind the existing wood knobs. Craft stores sell a variety of little wood shapes for less than $1 each. Around Halloween, you can get shapes suitable for gothy decor -- bats, skulls, cats, coffins. I always stock up on bats. ;-) I painted the wood bats and knobs purple, then drilled a hole in each bat for the screw to go through. To finish, I gave all the painted surfaces a couple coats of polyurethane.

Monday, February 10, 2020 Entryway Organizer Some projects have such an impact that I think, "Why didn't I do this ages ago?" Improving my garage entryway was one of those projects. Because I park my car in the garage, I always use the garage door into and out of the house. The door opens into tiny entryway which has the basement stairs on one side and a wall on the other. The entryway poses some real challenges. At only about 3 feet (1 meter) square, it provides just enough space for the door to swing open. Unless this door is propped or held open, it closes on its own. And trying to maneuver around the half-open door puts one at risk for falling down the basement stairs. (Safety was apparently of no concern to the designers of my house.) Safety and convenience were both greatly improved by the addition of a magnetic doorstop. Simply push the door open until it touches the doorstop, and the magnet holds the door open. I love it! :) To really level up the entryway, I wanted to add an organizer to hold my work laptop, bag, keys, and so forth. There was plenty of horizontal and vertical space on the wall; however, depth was an issue. The organizer had to be shallow enough to allow the door to open completely. The biggest challenge was finding something large enough to hold my work laptop but thin enough to fit behind the door. Finally, I found a wire basket at the thrift store. I decided on a board and batten style for the organizer. Using boards, tape, and cardboard, I marked the placement of each element. I wanted the organizer to serve a secondary purpose of covering prior doorknob damage and a badly patched area where a large dog door had once been. To accomplish this, I attached hardboard to the wall. Then I attached 1x3 (vertical) and 1x4 (horizontal) trim boards. Hooks would be attached to the horizontal boards, so I ensured that they were screwed firmly into the wall studs. I painted everything grey to match the walls. I attached the basket and four hooks. Done! :) Now, instead of hanging my bag on the back of a chair and putting my laptop on the dining room table, I can keep everything in one place by the door. And it all fits neatly behind the door in a space less than 5 inches (13 cm) deep! Posted by J.Bane

(˶ •́◡•̀ ˶) Here is an easy recipe to make tanghulu! 1) Get your fruits and wash them THROUGHLY 2) Put them on a sewer 3) Get a cup or bowl that you can put in the microwave 4) In your cup/bowl, put two cups of sugar and one cup of water! 5) Stir well! 6) Then put your cup with your water and sugar inside the microwave, this will be the key component to help your tanghulu harden! 7) Try microwaving your tanghulu 30 seconds continuously until it looks golden maple syrup, bubbly, and ready! (If you do it too much, it will burn... and that happened to mine once) 8) Prepare your ice bath. Get a bowl (If you are making a lot, make a big bowl. If a bit only, small bowl) 9) Start dipping your skewered fruit into the golden sugar syrup. Coating it will make it crunchier and better! 10) Right after, IMMEDIATELY put your fruit into the ice bath. Let it be for a bit 11) If the syrup didn't make your fruit harden or it isn't enough, try microwaving it again or dipping some more. But remember, every time you dip you MUST IMMEDIATELY put it into your ice bath right away. Have a great time crunching and enjoying your tanghulu! I hope you're having a great day! friendly(づ๑•ᴗ•๑)づ♡ Here is an OREO Mug Cake recipe! 1) Get some Oreos, as many as you want! 2) Get a cup/mug that is safe for you to put in the microwave (Like porcelain for example!) 3) Crush up your Oreos, make it really crushed up that it looks like dirt 4) Put your Oreos in your mug and add some milk! 5) Stir it in REALLY REALLY REALLY and I mean REALLY make sure it's crushed up and that there are no big chunks 6) After that, pop it in the microwave for about one minute or until it looks like your Oreo Mug Cake is ready 6) OPTIONAL! You can add some Oreo crumbs, or maybe some chocolate chips! Whatever you prefer 7) Get a spoon and enjoy! yum(っ˘ڡ˘ς) I'm not promising you that it will work, but it did for me! Hi! I hope you're having a great day! Here's a homemade ice cream recipe (THAT ACTUALLY WORKS) ! (˶ •́◡•̀ ˶) 1) Get a cup or bowl or whatever you'd like 2) Get some Heavy Whipping Cream and fill it up as much as you'd like (The more you put the more you get to eat) 3) Get some pure vanilla extract and add as much as you want (Don't add too little, otherwise no taste. But not too much or else too sweet) 4) This is optional, but if you want, get some flavoring to flavor your ice cream! I tried this with strawberry syrup and this was soo good 5) Mix it up A LOT and stir 6) When you are ready, put it in the freezer. The longer you put it in the more frozen it will be! I did this overnight and it turned out not too frozen so I guess I recommend over-night! That's all, thank you ε(´｡•᎑•`)っ 💕 I will be sometimes posting some good food recipes if they actually work! WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2011 DIY Gothy Hair Bows in Two Easy Steps I decided I wanted a hair bow with trailing ribbons, maybe due to memories of the braided ribbon barrettes that were THE thing when I was a little girl. The first bow I made was so easy that I made another.. and another... and another... They are really fun to make. :-) Step one: Make a bow with fabric, lace or wide ribbon. This can be done by cutting the material to your desired size and then folding or squishing it together in the middle. Tie the middle with a piece of thin ribbon, leaving plenty of extra ribbon hanging. Step two: Tie the bow to the barrette. Do this by running the thin ribbon under the metal arc on the back of the barrette and tying in tight knots. You can then leave the ribbons trailing or cut them. I like to add a drop of hot glue over the knots for extra security. Note: Before tying, consider if you want the barrette to open on the left or right. One option will be easier for you, depending on how you wear the bow and whether you're right- or left-handed. For a pair of bows to wear on either side of your head, I suggest making one with the barrette opening on the left and one opening on the right. If you want a simple bow, you are done! Sunday 17 April 2022 Black Widow Spider Truffles What's more appetising, I ask you, than biting into a huge fat venomous spider? And which deadly spider is more instantly familiar than our cannibalistic friend the black widow? God they're creepy aren't they. Even looking at this photo below gives me the creepy crawlies. Anyway, I long thought it would be a fun idea to make chocolate truffles decorated to look like spiders. They'd make a nice addition to a spooky afternoon tea, a Halloween party, a children's party, or just whenever you feel like baking spooky sweets. This was fairly time consuming, but the hardest part was tracing around the spider stencils and cutting them out. If you're more artistically talented than I, you might want to draw spider shapes straight onto the black card instead of printing out an image. This recipe yielded enough for about 10 of my fairly large ones, but you can make them any size you like. Ingredients: 100g unsalted butter 100g dark chocolate 1tsp cocoa 1 cup icing sugar + Cherries (morello, glacé, etc.) Rum, rum essence, or vanilla essence Black fondant Red fondant For spider bases: Black card stock (fairly stiff, not paper) Cardboard Glue Pencil Scissors Bases Method: Print out the image at the bottom of this post. Glue image into cardboard. Cut around the image carefully to create a stencil. Hold the stencil onto the black card stock and (this part is particularly fiddly) trace around it with a pencil. Cut out your spiders! Arrange them on a plate or pretty tray. Truffle Method: In a pot, melt together the butter and chocolate on the stove, slowly stirring til combined. Add half a cup of icing sugar, the cocoa, and the rum or vanilla essence. Stir, then add more icing sugar until the mixture is stiff and firm. 1 cup of icing sugar wasn't enough, so I added another half a cup, and a bit more cocoa for luck. Let cool til it's comfortable to handle. Using the spider stencil as a guide for how large the truffle should be, roll some mixture into a rough ball. Mush a cherry (or two) into it, then roll the mixture around in your hands until it's pleasingly round. Place on a plate, it doesn't matter if the bottom flattens. Repeat for as many truffles as you want, then put them in the fridge to chill for a couple of hours. Flatten out the black fondant as thinly as you can, you only want it a few millimetres thick. Lay the fondant over each truffle, and roll it in your hands until the whole truffle is covered. It doesn't matter if the underside is bare or untidy. Flatten out some red fondant, and using a sharp knife (xacto knife or non-serrated kitchen knife) carefully cut out hourglass shapes. Gently place the red hourglasses onto each truffle and pat to smoothen them down so they'll stay in place but not lose their shape. Put each truffle onto the black card spider base. Serve!

Often intellectual, perhaps academic, for him the human condition is heavy to bear. This long-suffering figure is flawed and doomed and may just reveal the monstrous in man. There are ghosts, spirits, and apparitions; demons, the devil, and the dead returned; vampires, zombies, and apparent monsters. The supernatural may be metaphorical – a tool for subversion. It is frequently suggested as one thing and revealed to be otherwise, if there at all. 𝔖𝔲𝔯𝔤𝔦𝔫𝔤 𝔖𝔲𝔰𝔭𝔢𝔫𝔰𝔢 The gothic tone is of fear: terror or horror, and halted breath. It is dread that creeps and suspicion that grows. Suspense builds in uncanny spaces, where everything is unnerving and nothing is as it seems. Often at odds with logic, rational thought is invited to leave as heightened senses are startled by the wind. 𝔖𝔩𝔢𝔢𝔭𝔩𝔢𝔰𝔰 𝔖𝔬𝔲𝔩𝔰 Just as the narrative fiction aims to unsettle the mind of the reader, gothic protagonists are similarly disturbed. Nighttime casts shadows on certainty. Sleep, if achieved, is addled with nightmares. Waking hours, in turn, are similarly plagued. The concept of reality is toyed with as sanity and truth can no longer be presumed.

No-Sew Sachet for Lazy People Posted by 💀MV on APRIL 6, 2009 If you’re like me, you absolutely hate to throw anything away. I believe that clutter can really bring down a person’s positive energy, so I try very hard to work through my packrat tendencies. I have been in a decluttering phase that’s lasted… oh, about half of my life now! I figure that if I absolutely must hang onto certain things, I’d better make sure that they can serve a functional purpose. Hence, my mission to reincarnate old things into new, awesome, functional stuff! Unlike a lot of crafty folks who seem to have infinite patience and dexterity, I’m more interested in instant gratification. In my opinion, the best projects (a) produce objects that are functional, rather than frivolous, (b) can be completed in the space of one afternoon, or even a few minutes, and (a) won’t clutter up my house too much during its creation, or after it’s finished and ready to enjoy! It is with this spirit in mind that I share my very humble instructions for a sachet that requires no sewing. Easiest Sachet Ever: INGREDIENTS: 1 pretty, but mateless, sock 1-2 handfuls of scented stuff – try potpourri, pieces of leftover scented candles, or extra fabric scraps treated with your favorite essential oil string, yarn, thread, or ribbon (even rubber bands, in a pinch!) — or just use leftover sock pieces Trim the cuff and everything below the heel off of your sock. This sachet can be made with the heel/toe section, but I like to work with the ankle. Tie off one end with your string/ribbon/etc., and add the scented stuff (I used a handful of leftover junk from my old Frebreze Scentstories discs!). Tie off the top, trimming your sock ends as needed. Sachets are wonderful for adding a nice little burst of scent to closets and drawers. You don’t need to spend piles of money on fancy little trimmings, but do make sure that you choose a scent that you love and that has some staying power. The simple construction of this type of sachet will enable you to change the scent when it becomes necessary. I usually keep the leftover cuffs to use as hair elastics, because even those “ouchless” elastics are sometimes murder on my extremely delicate hair. Leftover cuffs are perfect because they’re gentle, and ready-made in colors to match most of my wardrobe. And hey, free hair accessory… one that I don’t worry about losing or breaking! A word of caution here: DON’T make the same mistake I did, and use a “fuzzy” sock (pictured). If you do, as I have, you will need put in a few stitches to contain any stray sock fuzz. Or you can fold over the ends of the sock to create a finished hem before adding the rubber bands/elastics. These socks were a hostess gift from a lovely relative who stayed with us last fall. I fell in love with those adorable little crocheted flowers, and when the elastic began wearing out, I knew that I’d have to give them a new life!

Haunting your House for Halloween: Decor and Details OCTOBER 13, 2014 / Z. Lots of people find joy in decorating their house for Halloween, but those with a Gothic bent are especially bound to to relish it. These people will take particular care in crafting a beautiful yet bone-chilling atmosphere for their guests… For them, it isn’t so much “decorating” as it is “haunting” the house. Here are some of the easiest and most effective ways to perfect an eerie atmosphere: Cluster Candles. Clustered candles create a haunting and visually interesting focal point. At once reminiscent of somber Gothic cathedrals and spiritualist seances, try turning the lights out and illuminating the room by candlelight alone, as shown in the image below. If you are throwing a dinner party, this kind of lighting will hide any distracting, non-themed parts of the room and will keep guests’ focus on each other as they dine. For an even more magical effect (and double the light), place candles on a mirror or reflective platter. Paint it Black. Everyday items take on a commanding and ominous tone when given a coat of matte black spray paint. Consider painting pumpkins, cheap vases, figurines, candleholders, branches, and wine bottles. Mirror, Mirror. Mirrors have always been a bit uncanny, so use this to your advantage for Halloween! Place fabric or a veiling over the mirrors in the house– this was actually a Victorian mourning tradition to prevent the soul of the deceased from getting “trapped” in the looking glass. Covering all the mirrors in your house will definitely ramp up the creepy factor. You can also make your own haunted mirror (which is I guess what happens if you didn’t cover the mirror?) Eerie Vignettes. For the top of a mantle or table, consider grouping eerie objects together to form a “vignette”. Wilted or dried flowers in a vase beside antique glass bottles work well (below). For the most effective haunting vignette, stack old leather-bound books on a table and top them off with a skull. Phantom Photos. Round up some picture frames you already have, or buy some at a dollar store and paint them a matte black. Print out creepy Victorian-era photos (look up spirit photography) and place them in the frames, then put them around the house where people are bound to see them. Your guests will gradually realize your home is filled with ghostly portraits. Utilize your windows. Cut-out silhouettes always add a element of fun to your haunted house for Halloween, but consider going subtle for a more spooky effect. You can also forgo silhouettes altogether and create a foreboding atmosphere by covering your windows in red tissue paper (your house looks like this, doesn’t it?) Use LED lights as glowing eyes. Nocturnal creatures have tapetum lucidum, a reflective layer on the back of their retina helps them see clear in the dark. If you happen to unwittingly shine a light on an animal’s face, it can create an unnerving effect– two glowing dots stare back at you, disembodied in the dark. You can recreate this effect in your yard or house with a few methods by placing LED lights in film containers. A similar effect can be achieved by placing a glowstick inside a toilet-paper roll with two holes cut out. People passing do a double take as they try to figure out what kind of creature is staring at them– a cat, an owl, or something more sinister?
