Haunting your House for Halloween: Decor and Details OCTOBER 13, 2014 / Z. Lots of people find joy in decorating their house for Halloween, but those with a Gothic bent are especially bound to to relish it. These people will take particular care in crafting a beautiful yet bone-chilling atmosphere for their guests… For them, it isn’t so much “decorating” as it is “haunting” the house. Here are some of the easiest and most effective ways to perfect an eerie atmosphere: Cluster Candles. Clustered candles create a haunting and visually interesting focal point. At once reminiscent of somber Gothic cathedrals and spiritualist seances, try turning the lights out and illuminating the room by candlelight alone, as shown in the image below. If you are throwing a dinner party, this kind of lighting will hide any distracting, non-themed parts of the room and will keep guests’ focus on each other as they dine. For an even more magical effect (and double the light), place candles on a mirror or reflective platter. Paint it Black. Everyday items take on a commanding and ominous tone when given a coat of matte black spray paint. Consider painting pumpkins, cheap vases, figurines, candleholders, branches, and wine bottles. Mirror, Mirror. Mirrors have always been a bit uncanny, so use this to your advantage for Halloween! Place fabric or a veiling over the mirrors in the house– this was actually a Victorian mourning tradition to prevent the soul of the deceased from getting “trapped” in the looking glass. Covering all the mirrors in your house will definitely ramp up the creepy factor. You can also make your own haunted mirror (which is I guess what happens if you didn’t cover the mirror?) Eerie Vignettes. For the top of a mantle or table, consider grouping eerie objects together to form a “vignette”. Wilted or dried flowers in a vase beside antique glass bottles work well (below). For the most effective haunting vignette, stack old leather-bound books on a table and top them off with a skull. Phantom Photos. Round up some picture frames you already have, or buy some at a dollar store and paint them a matte black. Print out creepy Victorian-era photos (look up spirit photography) and place them in the frames, then put them around the house where people are bound to see them. Your guests will gradually realize your home is filled with ghostly portraits. Utilize your windows. Cut-out silhouettes always add a element of fun to your haunted house for Halloween, but consider going subtle for a more spooky effect. You can also forgo silhouettes altogether and create a foreboding atmosphere by covering your windows in red tissue paper (your house looks like this, doesn’t it?) Use LED lights as glowing eyes. Nocturnal creatures have tapetum lucidum, a reflective layer on the back of their retina helps them see clear in the dark. If you happen to unwittingly shine a light on an animal’s face, it can create an unnerving effect– two glowing dots stare back at you, disembodied in the dark. You can recreate this effect in your yard or house with a few methods by placing LED lights in film containers. A similar effect can be achieved by placing a glowstick inside a toilet-paper roll with two holes cut out. People passing do a double take as they try to figure out what kind of creature is staring at them– a cat, an owl, or something more sinister?

No-Sew Sachet for Lazy People Posted by 💀MV on APRIL 6, 2009 If you’re like me, you absolutely hate to throw anything away. I believe that clutter can really bring down a person’s positive energy, so I try very hard to work through my packrat tendencies. I have been in a decluttering phase that’s lasted… oh, about half of my life now! I figure that if I absolutely must hang onto certain things, I’d better make sure that they can serve a functional purpose. Hence, my mission to reincarnate old things into new, awesome, functional stuff! Unlike a lot of crafty folks who seem to have infinite patience and dexterity, I’m more interested in instant gratification. In my opinion, the best projects (a) produce objects that are functional, rather than frivolous, (b) can be completed in the space of one afternoon, or even a few minutes, and (a) won’t clutter up my house too much during its creation, or after it’s finished and ready to enjoy! It is with this spirit in mind that I share my very humble instructions for a sachet that requires no sewing. Easiest Sachet Ever: INGREDIENTS: 1 pretty, but mateless, sock 1-2 handfuls of scented stuff – try potpourri, pieces of leftover scented candles, or extra fabric scraps treated with your favorite essential oil string, yarn, thread, or ribbon (even rubber bands, in a pinch!) — or just use leftover sock pieces Trim the cuff and everything below the heel off of your sock. This sachet can be made with the heel/toe section, but I like to work with the ankle. Tie off one end with your string/ribbon/etc., and add the scented stuff (I used a handful of leftover junk from my old Frebreze Scentstories discs!). Tie off the top, trimming your sock ends as needed. Sachets are wonderful for adding a nice little burst of scent to closets and drawers. You don’t need to spend piles of money on fancy little trimmings, but do make sure that you choose a scent that you love and that has some staying power. The simple construction of this type of sachet will enable you to change the scent when it becomes necessary. I usually keep the leftover cuffs to use as hair elastics, because even those “ouchless” elastics are sometimes murder on my extremely delicate hair. Leftover cuffs are perfect because they’re gentle, and ready-made in colors to match most of my wardrobe. And hey, free hair accessory… one that I don’t worry about losing or breaking! A word of caution here: DON’T make the same mistake I did, and use a “fuzzy” sock (pictured). If you do, as I have, you will need put in a few stitches to contain any stray sock fuzz. Or you can fold over the ends of the sock to create a finished hem before adding the rubber bands/elastics. These socks were a hostess gift from a lovely relative who stayed with us last fall. I fell in love with those adorable little crocheted flowers, and when the elastic began wearing out, I knew that I’d have to give them a new life!
5 Beautiful Gothic movies to watch this Halloween SEPTEMBER 30, 2014 / Z. Halloween, even in its earliest stages, is inherently Gothic. The Gothic tradition is full of collisions between the dead and living, the past and present, the natural and supernatural. Here are just a few Gothic films touch on these themes, and will set the mood for a haunting and beautiful Halloween! The Innocents (1961). Based on Henry James’ 1898 novel The Turn of the Screw, this film is enthralling, beautifully shot, and delightfully creepy. The story follows a young governess stationed in a large Gothic estate, charged with looking after two children. While the kids start acting increasingly strange, she starts to see mysterious figures of a man and a woman throughout the grounds of the estate. The Innocents really is a must-see, though you won’t be able to get a certain melody out of your head after watching it… Häxan: Witchcraft through the ages (1926). Admittedly, I have a soft spot for 1920’s cinema, but even those of you who find silent film boring will be shocked by this one. Häxan is a quasi-documentary on the history of witchcraft, with elaborate reenactments set during various points in history. Not surprisingly, most of the film focuses in Europe in the middle ages, and there is some amazing imagery in these scenes. If nothing else, make sure you watch the unforgettable “Black Sabbath” scene. Rebecca (1940). “Last Night I dreamed I was at Manderly again”… Rebecca is a subtle chiller from Hitchcock that hits on all the major Gothic tropes: an old, creepy mansion on a cliff, a fair maiden inhabiting said mansion, recently married to a man who grows increasingly frightening, an evil housekeeper, a vengeful spirit that just won’t go away… you get the picture. Within the walls of the Manderly estate, the lines between the supernatural, bitter reality, and psychological breakdowns are masterfully blurred, making this a true classic in the Gothic genre. Fall of the House of Usher (1926). There have been several film adaptations of Poe’s short story, but Epstein’s is the dreamiest, in my opinion. Beautiful, surreal shots through haunting bogs and cathedral like mansions are my cup of tea. The combination of the visuals with the eerie, melancholic Medieval-sounding score is perfect. The Woman in Black (2012). Though this is a recent horror film, its pacing and visuals are reminiscent of some of the the older films on this list. It’s a classical Victorian ghost story that’s beautiful to look at and is genuinely creepy—if you can get over the fact that Harry Potter’s in it and he has a son! I hope you find a film or two on this list to be intriguing, if you have a favorite beautiful Gothic chiller you like watching around Halloween time!
Halloween Shopping Tips Posted by 💀MV on OCTOBER 19, 2009 If you’re anything like me, you get a special thrill out of going to the store to shop for Halloween stuff!!! (This is because you’ll probably use it all year, and not just until Halloween’s over.) Here are a few tips on what to look for, and what to avoid, this Halloween when you’re out scavenging for goodies: * CLOTHES: Anything non-seasonal that you can use all year ’round. Look for skeletons, spiders, bats, skulls. If you like pumpkins and will wear pumkin-themed clothing all year, go for it. Buy stuff in any colors you like… I like black & purple, which are easy to find at Halloween! * MAKEUP: Hit the makeup section and see if you can find anything interesting. Always seek black lipstick and nail polish. Also worth having: Lip or nail colors in dark, dramatic, or unusual colors; jewels or other cool accents for the face; “normal” cosmetics in cute gothy containers; special-effects cosmetics or theatrer-type makeup items that are hard-to-find normally (such as eyebrow plastic or spirit gum). * ACCESSORIES: Halloween is the best time of year to find accessories with bats, skulls, or other spooky themes. You can find just about anything you need, with a spooky style… hair accessories, purses, hosiery (gotta love striped stockings!), shoes, wigs, jewelry, and more! * HOME DECOR: Be very careful of items offered in this category, lest you get overly cheesy items in your enthusiasm! You can find some good stuff, though… like skull/death themed pieces, even spooky or cool-looking kitchen ware. DEFINITELY look for candles, as you can get fantastic styles and colors during the season! Be careful of plastic, cheaply or badly-made items. Remember that many of these are meant to be used only for a short time and then tossed away. It may take awhile to find quality items that will last in your home for years, but the efforts are so worth it! * EDIBLES: I like Halloween candy and treats all year ’round. Some of my favorite treats are things like General Mills Monster Cereals, Pillsbury Halloween cookies (just cut and bake), and of course, Halloween Pop Tarts. Many companies are beginning to release special Halloween edition things with either special packaging, or unusually-decorated versions of their regular products, so this is the perfect time of year to stock up! * CRAFT ITEMS: Absolutely nowhere is more fun than a craft store at Halloween… but take my advice and DON’T wait ’til the last minute! You can find all kinds of wonderful things here, to fulfill your crafting fetishes well into next year!! Look for fabric, notions, beads, ribbons, even cool accessories and must-have crafting essentials in creepy Halloween styles! Some craft stores do pre-season Halloween sales in September or even August, as crafty folks will often make their own costumes and come looking for their ingredients in advance. The early bird will catch the cutest stuff!! Latecomers may be surprised by a fantastic rare find or two, but I’d try to hit the craft shops as early in the season as possible. More tips… 1. Timing is key. It’s always best to start browsing as soon as the Halloween stuff goes up, usually around the middle of September. If you see something that you absolutely MUST have, snap it up at your earliest convenience — it may not be there next year, or even next week! You can also try to wait until November 1st to make the most of clearance sales (one of my personal missions in life!), but remember that Halloween stores typically close before then. My favorite place to try on November 1st would be drugstores, as they’re practically giving the stuff away. (The best stuff may be picked over — or gone entirely — if you wait too long!) 2. Location. If you see something that you absolutely MUST have multiples of, in a chain store, try visiting the same stores in different cities. For example, this year I found an awesome coffin container in the Target near my New England home; a few weeks later I visited my in-laws in NYC and came across the same one! (I should have bought it the second time around, but fortunatley coffin number one is in my office now!) 3. If you’re picking through clearance stuff, don’t be afraid to haggle. Lots of Halloween stuff is going to be seriously marked down come the first of November. Some pieces will just be thrown into the clearance bin without even being tagged! One year I found a thick faux dungeon chain (it was made of styrofoam and painted to look metallic and old/rusty) just sitting around with a bunch of cheap Halloween makeup, and even though it wasn’t tagged, the checker “decided” to sell it to me for 99 cents. A true Halloween find! 4. Plan ahead. Make lists of what you need, who’s having sales, or of where you got the best hauls in Halloweens past. Try your favorite “haunts” but don’t be afraid to plunge into uncharted territory. You never know what you’ll find! (My favorite discount store to Halloween shop is definitely Target, as their stuff is high enough in quality to last for many years… as for drugstores, it’s gotta be either CVS or Rite-Aid for their wide selections of makeup and costume-y pieces. I tend to avoid Wal-Mart, which sells cheesy “rustic” fall crap, and Halloween-themed shops, which are mostly filled with overpriced junk. I did get a nice ceramic skull-shaped serving tray at the Halloween store last year, though, so as I said… be flexible, and don’t be scared to travel off your beaten path!) I’ve gotten some good stuff this year so far, but will be making my last Halloween run on November first. Happy hunting, all!
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2011 DIY Gothy Hair Bows in Two Easy Steps I decided I wanted a hair bow with trailing ribbons, maybe due to memories of the braided ribbon barrettes that were THE thing when I was a little girl. The first bow I made was so easy that I made another.. and another... and another... They are really fun to make. :-) Step one: Make a bow with fabric, lace or wide ribbon. This can be done by cutting the material to your desired size and then folding or squishing it together in the middle. Tie the middle with a piece of thin ribbon, leaving plenty of extra ribbon hanging. Step two: Tie the bow to the barrette. Do this by running the thin ribbon under the metal arc on the back of the barrette and tying in tight knots. You can then leave the ribbons trailing or cut them. I like to add a drop of hot glue over the knots for extra security. Note: Before tying, consider if you want the barrette to open on the left or right. One option will be easier for you, depending on how you wear the bow and whether you're right- or left-handed. For a pair of bows to wear on either side of your head, I suggest making one with the barrette opening on the left and one opening on the right. If you want a simple bow, you are done! Or you can add more ribbon, beads, lace, charms... whatever suits your fancy. Posted by J.Bane

r/shortscarystories 5 days ago Zanxiyo The Haunted Timekeeper Julia had always loved antiques, particularly old clocks. When she found an exquisite, ornately carved grandfather clock at a yard sale, she bought it without hesitation. The previous owner warned her, "It has a history." Julia shrugged off his words attributing them to an attempt at raising the price. Back home, she placed the clock in her living room, pendulum swinging rhythmically. That night, she was awoken by the sound of faint ticking, louder than before. She brushed it off, convincing herself it was her imagination. Over the next few days, the ticking grew more insistent, echoing throughout the house. Then came the whispers. Indistinct at first, they seemed to emanate from the clock, growing clearer each night. "Set me free," they murmured. Julia felt a cold dread settle over her but convinced herself it was stress. On the fifth night, the whispers turned into pleas. "Free me," the voice cried, anguished. Desperate to end the torment, Julia decided to confront the source. She approached the clock at midnight, the room unnaturally cold. As she opened the glass door, the pendulum stopped abruptly. A chilling gust of wind enveloped her, and she saw, to her horror, a pair of eyes staring back from within the clock's dark interior. The face of a young woman, pale and ghostly, pressed against the glass. "Help me," the apparition whispered. Terrified, Julia reached inside, her hand trembling. As she touched the clock’s mechanism, there was a sudden, violent yank. Julia screamed as an invisible force pulled her into the clock. The next morning, the clock stood silent in her living room. A new face peered out from behind the glass: Julia’s own, eyes wide with terror, forever trapped within the clock’s cursed interior. The clock's pendulum resumed its motion, ticking steadily, waiting for the next owner.

Thursday, May 29, 2014 Gardening 101 “Gardening” can be intimidating. Regardless of where you are in the process, there is always room for improvement. The great thing about gardening is that you can make mistakes, learn from those mistakes, and still enjoy the process. It’s probably a fine time to emphasize that this is true of cultivating our own lives as well as cultivating plants and flowers. This might begin to read a bit cheesy but if you’ve ever been lost, you know what I mean. We have to keep tilling, seeding, fertilizing, mulching, weeding and pruning. Unless you have an exotic rose bush, this might seem easy to do as an experienced gardener of which I am not. I learned, as many gardeners do, through trial and error. Believe me; I have made my share of mistakes. Here are a few tips that I have found to be helpful. Take care of your investment—YOU! If you’re not in a good place, get out. And for goodness sake, find a good therapist. I can’t emphasize this enough. Don’t underestimate talk therapy. Rediscovering yourself takes time and a good therapist will only encourage you to be the best version of you. Just as plants need space to grow, so do you. Space can be physical (an apartment, a house, a room! Virginia Woolf wrote an entire essay on this. Sandra Cisneros wrote a beautiful poem “A House Of My Own”) or it can be symbolic space (a journal, a block of time to go for a walk, a therapist’s office!). As my life changed, I left a house and land to move into a small apartment. This is where I started gardening in pots. I knew nothing about gardening so the first plant I picked, I picked from what I affectionately call “the death and dying” section also known as the discount plants section. The plant I picked up was colorful but creepy. I learned it was a bromeliad, a tropical plant which I wasn’t actually aware of at the time. It turns out that bromeliads are “undemanding and easy to grow” a quick Google search tells me. I don’t recall searching for any care instructions at the time. I decided to wing it (the opposite of how I typically approach my life). I loved the bloom. What I didn’t realize is that bromeliadsbloom a single time… then they die. Great. Sigh. But wait! I did a bit of research and knew to look forward to “pups”, growing buds at the base of the leaves. These pups are ready to be separated when they are about half the size of the mother plant and should be removed by cutting with a sharp knife or clippers as close to the mother plant as possible. I had no idea that I would be performing surgery. Nevertheless, I ended up with three pups after the mother passed away. I would be lying if I wrote that this didn’t break my heart but with the pups came new flowers and new pups; and, all Goths know that Death is part of Life. Not all plants require the same amount of fertilizer or water. I learned that I’m a “slow processor” so when I am hurt or upset, it takes me quite a while to understand why. Pay attention to your climate. The USDA Hardiness Zone Map divides North America into 11 separate zones with each zone being 10°F warmer (or colder) than the adjacent zone. I require a great deal of indirect sunlight. I lived in Massachusetts for a while and could not hack it. It was overcast and dreary. My little Goth heart needs sunlight… just not direct sunlight. I always use a parasol when I go for walks which I enjoy doing in town to look at the various Victorian style homes and in my favorite garden cemetery, Hollywood Cemetery. As I mentioned before, know that sometimes it is trial and error. Posted by Goth Gardener at 7:23 PM

Sunday 17 April 2022 Black Widow Spider Truffles What's more appetising, I ask you, than biting into a huge fat venomous spider? And which deadly spider is more instantly familiar than our cannibalistic friend the black widow? God they're creepy aren't they. Even looking at this photo below gives me the creepy crawlies. Anyway, I long thought it would be a fun idea to make chocolate truffles decorated to look like spiders. They'd make a nice addition to a spooky afternoon tea, a Halloween party, a children's party, or just whenever you feel like baking spooky sweets. This was fairly time consuming, but the hardest part was tracing around the spider stencils and cutting them out. If you're more artistically talented than I, you might want to draw spider shapes straight onto the black card instead of printing out an image. This recipe yielded enough for about 10 of my fairly large ones, but you can make them any size you like. Ingredients: 100g unsalted butter 100g dark chocolate 1tsp cocoa 1 cup icing sugar + Cherries (morello, glacé, etc.) Rum, rum essence, or vanilla essence Black fondant Red fondant For spider bases: Black card stock (fairly stiff, not paper) Cardboard Glue Pencil Scissors Bases Method: Print out the image at the bottom of this post. Glue image into cardboard. Cut around the image carefully to create a stencil. Hold the stencil onto the black card stock and (this part is particularly fiddly) trace around it with a pencil. Cut out your spiders! Arrange them on a plate or pretty tray. Truffle Method: In a pot, melt together the butter and chocolate on the stove, slowly stirring til combined. Add half a cup of icing sugar, the cocoa, and the rum or vanilla essence. Stir, then add more icing sugar until the mixture is stiff and firm. 1 cup of icing sugar wasn't enough, so I added another half a cup, and a bit more cocoa for luck. Let cool til it's comfortable to handle. Using the spider stencil as a guide for how large the truffle should be, roll some mixture into a rough ball. Mush a cherry (or two) into it, then roll the mixture around in your hands until it's pleasingly round. Place on a plate, it doesn't matter if the bottom flattens. Repeat for as many truffles as you want, then put them in the fridge to chill for a couple of hours. Flatten out the black fondant as thinly as you can, you only want it a few millimetres thick. Lay the fondant over each truffle, and roll it in your hands until the whole truffle is covered. It doesn't matter if the underside is bare or untidy. Flatten out some red fondant, and using a sharp knife (xacto knife or non-serrated kitchen knife) carefully cut out hourglass shapes. Gently place the red hourglasses onto each truffle and pat to smoothen them down so they'll stay in place but not lose their shape. Put each truffle onto the black card spider base. Serve!
