Sunday 17 April 2022 Black Widow Spider Truffles What's more appetising, I ask you, than biting into a huge fat venomous spider? And which deadly spider is more instantly familiar than our cannibalistic friend the black widow? God they're creepy aren't they. Even looking at this photo below gives me the creepy crawlies. Anyway, I long thought it would be a fun idea to make chocolate truffles decorated to look like spiders. They'd make a nice addition to a spooky afternoon tea, a Halloween party, a children's party, or just whenever you feel like baking spooky sweets. This was fairly time consuming, but the hardest part was tracing around the spider stencils and cutting them out. If you're more artistically talented than I, you might want to draw spider shapes straight onto the black card instead of printing out an image. This recipe yielded enough for about 10 of my fairly large ones, but you can make them any size you like. Ingredients: 100g unsalted butter 100g dark chocolate 1tsp cocoa 1 cup icing sugar + Cherries (morello, glacé, etc.) Rum, rum essence, or vanilla essence Black fondant Red fondant For spider bases: Black card stock (fairly stiff, not paper) Cardboard Glue Pencil Scissors Bases Method: Print out the image at the bottom of this post. Glue image into cardboard. Cut around the image carefully to create a stencil. Hold the stencil onto the black card stock and (this part is particularly fiddly) trace around it with a pencil. Cut out your spiders! Arrange them on a plate or pretty tray. Truffle Method: In a pot, melt together the butter and chocolate on the stove, slowly stirring til combined. Add half a cup of icing sugar, the cocoa, and the rum or vanilla essence. Stir, then add more icing sugar until the mixture is stiff and firm. 1 cup of icing sugar wasn't enough, so I added another half a cup, and a bit more cocoa for luck. Let cool til it's comfortable to handle. Using the spider stencil as a guide for how large the truffle should be, roll some mixture into a rough ball. Mush a cherry (or two) into it, then roll the mixture around in your hands until it's pleasingly round. Place on a plate, it doesn't matter if the bottom flattens. Repeat for as many truffles as you want, then put them in the fridge to chill for a couple of hours. Flatten out the black fondant as thinly as you can, you only want it a few millimetres thick. Lay the fondant over each truffle, and roll it in your hands until the whole truffle is covered. It doesn't matter if the underside is bare or untidy. Flatten out some red fondant, and using a sharp knife (xacto knife or non-serrated kitchen knife) carefully cut out hourglass shapes. Gently place the red hourglasses onto each truffle and pat to smoothen them down so they'll stay in place but not lose their shape. Put each truffle onto the black card spider base. Serve!

Horror Short Story: The Accident In this horror short story, a man tries to cope with what he has done. Written by: Reddit user Minnboy Halverson sat in his dark living room. He hadn’t moved for over an hour. The accident earlier that evening kept playing over and over in his mind. The light turned red, but he was in a hurry and accelerated. An orange blur came from his right and in a split second there was a violent jolt, then the bicyclist rolled across his hood and fell out of sight on the pavement. Horns blared angrily and he panicked, stepping on the gas and screeching away from the chaos into the darkness, shaken and keeping an eye on his rearview mirror until he got home. Why did you run? He’d never committed a crime before this and punished himself by imagining years in jail, his career gone, his family gone, his future gone. Why not just go to the police right now? Then someone tapped on the front door and his world suddenly crumbled away beneath him. They found me. There was nothing he could do but answer it. Running would only make matters worse. Trembling, he got up, went to the door and opened it. A police officer stood under the porch light. “Mr. Halverson?” asked the grim officer. He let out a defeated sigh. “Yes. Let me —”I am terribly sorry, but I’m afraid I have some bad news. Your son’s bike was struck by a hit and run driver this evening. He died at the scene. I’m very sorry for your loss..."

-August 19, 2017 What seeing red looks like. EVERYONE LOVES THE FIRST DAY OF A NEW JOB, RIGHT? NEW COLLEAGUES, NEW FRIENDS. IT’S A DAY FULL OF POTENTIAL AND HOPE, BEFORE ALL THE DREARY DEPRESSIONS OF REALITY SHOW UP TO RUIN ALL THE FUN. I LIKE THE FIRST DAY OF WORK FOR A DIFFERENT REASON THOUGH. YOU SEE, I HAVE A SORT OF POWER. WHEN I LOOK A COLORED OUTLINE BASED ON HOW LONG THAT PERSON HAS TO LIVE. MOST EVERYONE I MEET AROUND MY AGE IS SURROUNDED BY A SOLID GREEN HUE, WHICH MEANS THEY HAVE PLENTY OF TIME LEFT, LIVING TO OLD AGE. A FAIR AMOUNT OF THEM HAVE A PEACH TINGE TO THEIR AURA WHICH TENDS TO MEAN A CANCER OR DEPRESSION. ANYTHING THAT TAKES PEOPLE“BEFORE THEIR TIME” AS THEY SAY. THE REAL FUN IS WHEN THE AURAS VENTURE INTO THE RED END OF THE SPECTRUM, THOUGH. EVERY NOW AND AGAIN I’LL SEE SOMEONE WHO’S BASICALLY THROBBING FADE. IT’S SUCH A RUSH TO SEE THEM AND KNOW THEIR TIME IS NUMBERED. WITH THAT IN MIND, I ALWAYS GET TO WORK VERY EARLY SO I CAN SCOUT OUT MY COLLEAGUES’ FATES. THE FIRST MAN WHO WALKED IN WAS BASICALLY RADIATING RED. TOO BAD, BRO. BUT AS PEOPLE KEPT WALKING IN, THEY ALL HAD THE SAME RAPIDLY FADING COLOR. I FINALLY CAUGHT A GLIMPSE OF MY OWN REFLECTION, SUDDENLY PLUMMETING TO A RED LIKE THE OTHERS. OUR BOSS STEPPED IN SMILING AND LOCKED THE DOOR, HIS AURA A SICKENING SHADE OF GREEN... ZENRYHAO

Tuesday 14 September 2021 Penta-Pretzels DIY These are awesome for picnics or parties. You can use a different amount of dough to make them larger or smaller to your liking. You can of course use this recipe to make pretzels in the traditional shape, but because we're weird, let's make them pentacle shaped. Ingredients/Zutaten: 3 1/2 cups (500g) plain flour 1 cup (250ml) warm water 1 Tbsp dry active yeast or a cube of fresh yeast 1 tsp sugar 25-50g butter 3 Tbsp baking soda Method/Zubereitung: Put flour into a large mixing bowl (or bread machine if you're lazy like me) and make a little well in the centre. Into the well pour your warm water. You can also use slightly warm milk instead of water. Sprinkle the yeast onto the water (or crumble if using fresh yeast), then add the sugar. Give it a wee stir. Having ideally let it soften first, add the butter. Knead the dough until well mixed. Leave the dough to rise for about 20 minutes, it should hopefully double in size. Divide the dough into about eight equal pieces, but this will depend on how big you want your pretzels to be. Between your hands, roll the dough out into very long, thin sausages. The part for the ring should be thicker, but the star part shouldn't be much thicker than a pencil. Make a ring and twist the ends together. Carefully lay the thinner sausage over the ring in the shape of a five-pointed star. Pinch the corners and mush the dough carefully into the ring to ensure a good shape and a good stick. Be careful here! Boil a litre of water in a pot. Add three tablespoons of baking soda to the hot water, and turn down the heat so it stays hot but not boiling. If you are making a big batch, remember to use three tablespoons of baking soda per every litre of hot water. Gently place each pretzel into the water, and leave it there for 30-60 seconds. Make sure the whole thing gets wet. This process is what gives the pretzel its lovely brown exterior. With a slotted spoon or similar, lift the pretzel from the water and place it on a baking tray. While wet, sprinkle thick chunky salt on. You can use other toppings too if you really want. Preheat oven to 180˚C (360˚F) and once heated, bake your pretzels for 20-25 minutes. They should be brown and properly baked. Best enjoyed warm and fresh, but they'll keep for a day. Guten Appetit!

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2011 Easy and Inexpensive DIY Jewelry Display With this simple and inexpensive project, you can put your jewelry on display to enjoy every day. Cost: $5-15 Materials needed: picture frame velvet or other fabric cork tile cardboard duct tape scissors utility knife ruler or measuring tape stapler {optional} Your picture frame can be any size but needs to have enough depth to accommodate the cork and cardboard. No glass is needed. I used an 11" x 14" frame. You can use any opaque fabric of your choice. Black velvet makes an especially lovely backdrop for silver jewelry. I used pieces of a $4 velvet skirt from a thrift store. Cork tiles and rolls are sold in various sizes online and at many craft and office supply stores. A package of four 12" x 12" tiles costs about $10. Begin by cutting your cork tile and your cardboard to the proper size to fit into the back of your frame. If you have glass from the frame, you can use it as a template. I like to use a utility knife and ruler; scissors will also work. Cover the tile with fabric by placing the fabric right side down, placing the cork on top, and wrapping the fabric around to the back of the cork. Trim the fabric as needed; secure with staples or tape. Place the fabric-covered cork face down into the back of the frame, then place the cardboard on top of the cork. Secure with duct tape. Turn frame over to reveal your completed project! Use pins to hang your jewelry on the display.

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2011 DIY Gothy Hair Bows in Two Easy Steps I decided I wanted a hair bow with trailing ribbons, maybe due to memories of the braided ribbon barrettes that were THE thing when I was a little girl. The first bow I made was so easy that I made another.. and another... and another... They are really fun to make. :-) Step one: Make a bow with fabric, lace or wide ribbon. This can be done by cutting the material to your desired size and then folding or squishing it together in the middle. Tie the middle with a piece of thin ribbon, leaving plenty of extra ribbon hanging. Step two: Tie the bow to the barrette. Do this by running the thin ribbon under the metal arc on the back of the barrette and tying in tight knots. You can then leave the ribbons trailing or cut them. I like to add a drop of hot glue over the knots for extra security. Note: Before tying, consider if you want the barrette to open on the left or right. One option will be easier for you, depending on how you wear the bow and whether you're right- or left-handed. For a pair of bows to wear on either side of your head, I suggest making one with the barrette opening on the left and one opening on the right. If you want a simple bow, you are done! Or you can add more ribbon, beads, lace, charms... whatever suits your fancy. Posted by J.Bane
Wednesday 19 October 2016 Making Black Ice Cream! Ingredients: 2 cups heavy whipping cream 1 tin sweetened condensed milk Pinch of sea salt Black gel food dye Monin caramel flavour syrup I whipped the cream until it was stiff with a stick mixer, but an electric beater would have been better. Then I poured the condensed milk onto it, the pinch of sea salt, and flavour syrup to taste. I folded it together carefully, before adding (what turned out to be) a generous amount of black gel food dye. I found that whipping the mixture, instead of stirring, helped the colour to combine with the other ingredients better. After 24 hours this should have definitely been frozen, but thanks to my freezer being as asshole, the big reveal of my creation was a fail. The taste was alright, although it mostly tasted of condensed milk. In future, I would use a stronger flavouring agent, and perhaps activated charcoal in addition to food colouring to create a darker colour. I would also make sure the freezer door was closed properly! Bah! 'Til next time, thanks for visiting! Would you try black ice cream?

Saturday 25 January 2020 17th Century Sack Posset 17th century references the diary of Samuel Pepys, so I thought I would just have to read that. And so I have been. Well, listening to it on audiobook through Audible, that counts as reading, does it not? It's 115 hours of listening, it's not a small undertaking. Everything mentioned in the diaries that I wasn't already familiar with, I looked up, and one of those things was "sack posset". I'm so glad I did. I think the mildly amusing name attracted me most, but I looked up as many recipes for sack posset as I could, written at the time. No two were exactly alike, so I combined the essential ingredients and rough ratios from every recipe I saw, and had a crack at making it. It was amazing. Warming, soothing, delicious, makes you all cosy and sleepy. Sack posset is generally served in the evening after supper, the last thing you give your guests before they head home. Obviously this is 18+ or 21+ depending on where you live because of alcohol laws, but I've heard the sherry can be substituted for orange and lemon juice, though I haven't tried it. The mixture can be thickened with bread crumbs if you fancy eating it with a spoon instead of drinking it, but I've not tried that either. Some old recipes suggest adding mace, crushed almonds, rosewater, musk, or even ambergris. It's a flexible recipe, you could experiment with whatever ingredients take your fancy. Let us begin! This yields about 3 coffee mugs full, but is best served in teacups. You can warm the cups beforehand if you wish. Ingredients: 400ml heavy cream 300ml sherry 7 egg yolks 2 egg whites 1/2 cup sugar ground nutmeg ground/sticks of cinnamon Method: Pour the cream and sugar into a pot. Sprinkle a small amount of the nutmeg and cinnamon in, and stir. Some recipes called for a blade of mace, but mace is fairly expensive so I omitted it. Separate yolks and egg whites. There are several methods to do this, I like passing the yolk between the shell halves. You might have one of these doodads. Put the yolks into a large basin or similar. If you don't want to waste the leftover whites, you could turn them into meringues. Crack two whole eggs in, whites included. Add the sherry to the eggs and whisk together until eggs are beaten. Boil some water in a pot that will comfortably sit the basin atop it. Place the egg-sherry mixture over the boiling water. If exposed to direct heat, the eggs will cook, yuck! Stir it continuously and test the temperature with a knuckle. Put the cream-sugar pot on the stove at a medium heat. Stir this regularly too. The cream should be taken off the heat just before it starts to boil. Once the egg-sherry mixture is warm, take the basin off the boiling water. Carefully pour the cream into the eggs, pouring a little at a time, and stirring constantly until all is combined. Ladle into teacups and enjoy! I read that cushions were placed around the basin to keep it warm. It's important that it doesn't get too hot or else you'll end up with scrambled eggs, you want it at a warm, drinkable temperature. It's quite filling, you'll probably find that a couple of teacups is loads!

Monday 11 September 2023 Black Friday's Realistic Blood Punch/Cocktail Haven't you always wanted to feel more authentically like a vampire while getting drunk at the same time? I've always wondered why I could never find a recipe for an alcoholic drink, be it a punch or cocktail, that resembled blood beyond just being red. Why was there nothing out there with the consistency of blood, too? The goal for this recipe was to avoid food colouring, and get it the right colour just with the ingredients. Theoretically you could make just about any drink red by adding food colouring, but that feels like cheating. It also needed to taste good. What I really wanted to achieve, was an alcoholic drink that felt and moved like blood. This may not be perfect but it was the closest I could get whilst maintaining the flavour. Be the coolest/weirdest host ever by providing your guests with a punch that not only looks, but feels like blood. Best of all, it tastes lovely and makes for easy drinking. Serve it cooled, or leave it slightly warm to make it feel creepier. You can add ice cubes (I recommend ice with red food colouring in it) but remember if you put ice into a pitcher or punch bowl, this will dilute the punch and thin its consistency as it melts. Best Halloween punch ever? I think so. The recipe can be scaled up or down to make a whole bowl or pitcher of punch, or just a couple of cocktails. The recipe below yields two or three servings. Simply multiply the recipe depending on how many people you're likely to be serving. For example, if you're serving 12 guests, multiply the ingredients by 6. For 20 guests, by 10, and so forth. The measurements don't have to be exact! You will need: 150ml/5oz Red wine (merlot or cabernet sauvignon) 30ml/1oz Cherry brandy or cherry liqueur 60ml/2oz Vodka 30ml/1oz Raspberry syrup or cordial 30ml/1oz Grenadine 120ml/4oz Pomegranate juice 3tsp. Arrowroot powder Method: In a small, separate dish, mix the arrowroot with 3 teaspoons cold water. Stir until you have a smooth white liquid with no lumps. Put the other ingredients together into a pot on the stove. Heat carefully over medium heat. It should get hot but not boil, about 80˚C/176˚F. Do not let it boil! Gradually add the arrowroot liquid into the pot, stir consistently. You should start to feel the mixture thicken slightly as you stir, this only takes a minute or two. Remove from the heat and put into a heat safe container. Put in the fridge to cool for 30 minutes or until cooled. Leaving it for too long will cause it to congeal a bit. People may like horror for many different reasons. Personification of non-human's, perspective, etc. There's some considerate guidelines to take in-to account. Of course, horror's meant to be scary, but not to frightening as to cause panic attack. Trigger warnings may give away the ending or some plot twist. Here are some tips: ~Profanity. Can say like 'oh dear' or something. ~Gore, avoiding unnecessary graphic detail. ~Animals. Can be something like 'the dog growls at presence of ghost' ~Self harm, etc. You can, however, have a character sacrifice oneself. ~Abuse (like exploitation, arranged marriage) although you can imply abduct, poison, etc. ~Stereotyping groups (portraying certain authorities, religions, cultures, etc. as disrespectful) You can use (with discretion) controversial topics (execution, foeticide, the double effect, etc.) lightly. You can mention potential topics (cannibal, baby death, poisons, apocalypse, etc.) in story insofar as it partains to the plot, but no glorifying trauma. You can have the narrator be the villain, victim, or bystander. Have fun writing, and heed your emotions!

‘First Words‘ by alatus_corruptrix Any day now, she’ll say her first words. My wife and I have been playfully betting on what she’ll say first – ‘Mamá’ or ‘Daddy.’ I can hear my wife crooning over and over while she feeds her ‘Mama’s little girl! Mamá loves you so much!’ Sometimes, she’s not even subtle about it – ‘Say ‘Mamá!’ Come on! ‘Mamá!” I don’t mind it though. I still believe I’ll win. When we first brought her home, she would scream and cry and nothing my wife would say could calm her down. Ours must be a daddy’s girl. I sit her in her chair and my wife and I begin babbling like chickens – ‘Mamá!’ ‘Daddy!’ ‘Say Mamá!’ ‘Who’s daddy’s baby?’ I pull the gag from our little girl’s mouth. “P-please… what do you want from me? Please, let me go…” My wife’s smile falls from her face. With a heavy heart, I put the gag back in as the girl starts to scream. I take her back and dispose of her. When I return, I find my wife crying. “It’s ok, honey,” I tell her; “the next one will be better, I promise.”

Halloween Shopping Tips Posted by 💀MV on OCTOBER 19, 2009 If you’re anything like me, you get a special thrill out of going to the store to shop for Halloween stuff!!! (This is because you’ll probably use it all year, and not just until Halloween’s over.) Here are a few tips on what to look for, and what to avoid, this Halloween when you’re out scavenging for goodies: * CLOTHES: Anything non-seasonal that you can use all year ’round. Look for skeletons, spiders, bats, skulls. If you like pumpkins and will wear pumkin-themed clothing all year, go for it. Buy stuff in any colors you like… I like black & purple, which are easy to find at Halloween! * MAKEUP: Hit the makeup section and see if you can find anything interesting. Always seek black lipstick and nail polish. Also worth having: Lip or nail colors in dark, dramatic, or unusual colors; jewels or other cool accents for the face; “normal” cosmetics in cute gothy containers; special-effects cosmetics or theatrer-type makeup items that are hard-to-find normally (such as eyebrow plastic or spirit gum). * ACCESSORIES: Halloween is the best time of year to find accessories with bats, skulls, or other spooky themes. You can find just about anything you need, with a spooky style… hair accessories, purses, hosiery (gotta love striped stockings!), shoes, wigs, jewelry, and more! * HOME DECOR: Be very careful of items offered in this category, lest you get overly cheesy items in your enthusiasm! You can find some good stuff, though… like skull/death themed pieces, even spooky or cool-looking kitchen ware. DEFINITELY look for candles, as you can get fantastic styles and colors during the season! Be careful of plastic, cheaply or badly-made items. Remember that many of these are meant to be used only for a short time and then tossed away. It may take awhile to find quality items that will last in your home for years, but the efforts are so worth it! * EDIBLES: I like Halloween candy and treats all year ’round. Some of my favorite treats are things like General Mills Monster Cereals, Pillsbury Halloween cookies (just cut and bake), and of course, Halloween Pop Tarts. Many companies are beginning to release special Halloween edition things with either special packaging, or unusually-decorated versions of their regular products, so this is the perfect time of year to stock up! * CRAFT ITEMS: Absolutely nowhere is more fun than a craft store at Halloween… but take my advice and DON’T wait ’til the last minute! You can find all kinds of wonderful things here, to fulfill your crafting fetishes well into next year!! Look for fabric, notions, beads, ribbons, even cool accessories and must-have crafting essentials in creepy Halloween styles! Some craft stores do pre-season Halloween sales in September or even August, as crafty folks will often make their own costumes and come looking for their ingredients in advance. The early bird will catch the cutest stuff!! Latecomers may be surprised by a fantastic rare find or two, but I’d try to hit the craft shops as early in the season as possible. More tips… 1. Timing is key. It’s always best to start browsing as soon as the Halloween stuff goes up, usually around the middle of September. If you see something that you absolutely MUST have, snap it up at your earliest convenience — it may not be there next year, or even next week! You can also try to wait until November 1st to make the most of clearance sales (one of my personal missions in life!), but remember that Halloween stores typically close before then. My favorite place to try on November 1st would be drugstores, as they’re practically giving the stuff away. (The best stuff may be picked over — or gone entirely — if you wait too long!) 2. Location. If you see something that you absolutely MUST have multiples of, in a chain store, try visiting the same stores in different cities. For example, this year I found an awesome coffin container in the Target near my New England home; a few weeks later I visited my in-laws in NYC and came across the same one! (I should have bought it the second time around, but fortunatley coffin number one is in my office now!) 3. If you’re picking through clearance stuff, don’t be afraid to haggle. Lots of Halloween stuff is going to be seriously marked down come the first of November. Some pieces will just be thrown into the clearance bin without even being tagged! One year I found a thick faux dungeon chain (it was made of styrofoam and painted to look metallic and old/rusty) just sitting around with a bunch of cheap Halloween makeup, and even though it wasn’t tagged, the checker “decided” to sell it to me for 99 cents. A true Halloween find! 4. Plan ahead. Make lists of what you need, who’s having sales, or of where you got the best hauls in Halloweens past. Try your favorite “haunts” but don’t be afraid to plunge into uncharted territory. You never know what you’ll find! (My favorite discount store to Halloween shop is definitely Target, as their stuff is high enough in quality to last for many years… as for drugstores, it’s gotta be either CVS or Rite-Aid for their wide selections of makeup and costume-y pieces. I tend to avoid Wal-Mart, which sells cheesy “rustic” fall crap, and Halloween-themed shops, which are mostly filled with overpriced junk. I did get a nice ceramic skull-shaped serving tray at the Halloween store last year, though, so as I said… be flexible, and don’t be scared to travel off your beaten path!) I’ve gotten some good stuff this year so far, but will be making my last Halloween run on November first. Happy hunting, all!

r/shortscarystories 1 day ago deathherself3 Warming Up Drip, drip, drip. The ice was melting. My prison was thawing. Soon, I would be free. How had the world changed, I wondered. Would it be easy to find food, to find warmth, to find shelter? Would I be stranded here on the ice or in the water? Drip, drip, drip. I had been frozen for so long. So very long. My siblings beside me yearned for freedom just as I did. When the ice gave way we would burst forth and see what the world offered us. I hoped it was thriving out there. Drip, drip, drip. We needed it to be thriving. Whatever was out there wasn't ready for us, I was sure. Our hosts, whatever form they took, were unsuspecting. We could, and have, survived for hundreds of thousands of years in this cold, unforgiving desert. The permafrost we have been hibernating in is giving way to the warming earth below. It was almost time to leave, to spread, to infect. Drip, drip, drip.
White Lie I'm the last one here. Those things have killed everyone else. Those things with the huge wings, with the beady eyes, with the sharp claws....every time I close my eyes see my coworkers being ripped apart. A few of us made it to the building here, but even here we aren't safe. I watched them get picked off one by one, screaming as they fought against death. I tried to stop it I swear I did I tried... Now I'm running through the building to the main power center. With no one else to ask, I'm tasked with pressing one of these buttons. Either will press the red button, or the green button. Supposedly, one button will turn the power doors back on, protecting us from whatever that shrieking, hungry, and angry...thing is outside. That's the red button. The other button is green and opens the opposite side power door, and I can only imagine what might be out there. Why had I agreed to come and research in this lab? I think as I run, hearing the screeches behind me. Oh .... Why did I lie on my application? Why didn't I admit I was color blind?

r/TwoSentenceHorror 12 hr. ago HoardofAngryQuokkas It's happening again - I must wash away all this blood; silently, I creep out to the kitchen like I've been doing for the past three years, spending hours in the moonlight scrubbing out every speck of evidence. I know my dad and brothers think I'm some late bloomer, but I just don't want to freeze to death out in the menstrual hut like mum did.

They’re in the house. No more than a moment or two passes before the door to the bedroom starts shuddering. The things I piled against it are holding, for now, but I know, realistically, that they’re going to manage to come through. I keep rocking my little girl, humming a lullaby in her ear to calm her as she cries. The pounding grows in force and volume, the frame starting to crack. I put my little girl on my lap, her back to my chest, and I stroke her head with both hands, from the top of her scalp, down across her ears, just as I’ve done. Just the way she loves it. The effect is instantaneous. Her desperate crying calms to a series of sobs and hiccoughs, her small body shuddering against mine in fear. I keep humming to her, soothing her hair, acting for all the world as if nothing is out of place, not a single thing amiss. Agonisingly slowly, in a reverse cadence of the sound of splintering wood, she calms down. I can feel it when she stops tensing, as I keep stroking her down the sides of her head. A final hiccough of a sob, and she falls quiet, her body relaxed. She doesn’t even have time to realise what’s happening as I twist her neck with a violent jerk, accompanied by a dry snap of a sound. She’s dead before she can even slump down into my lap. The door is giving way, the furniture pushed back. I may be torn limb from limb while I scream, but at least my baby angel’s safe from harm. 8 YEARS AGO

r/shortscarystories 13 hr. ago S_G_Woodhouse I think I'm losing my head I was driving home after a long day at work. I blinked, and the next thing I knew, I was at home having dinner with my wife and 2 daughters. "What's wrong honey" she asked me. "I don't know. I just feel like I've forgotten something" I replied, confused. Forgot something? It was much worse than that, I had no memory of going home. I reassured her and spent the rest of the evening as normal, re-watching one of my favorite movies. Eventually, I dozed off. I dreamt strange things. I saw myself, having a picnic with my parents. Except they weren't smiling and happy like I remembered them. Instead, they were sitting on the picnic blanket, staring into space, their faces closed and expressionless. No matter how much I shouted at them in my daze, I couldn't see any life left in them; it was as if they were there, without being there. Detached. I woke up in my bed, alone. I looked all over the house, but not only was my wife gone, so were my children. My cell phone line was dead, no service. I went outside to get my car and drive to work, thinking I'd try to call my wife a little later. There was no one on the road but me. It was as if the whole Earth had emptied out. I'd dismissed my detachment last night, but I was seriously beginning to wonder if I was losing my mind. I was lost. I decided to go to my work to see if anyone was still in town, if a national evacuation drill was underway and could explain everything. Once there, I rushed back into the building, hoping to find someone who could explain what was going on. And when I opened the door, I was relieved to see that all my colleagues were there. At last, I could find out what was going on. I walked over to a colleague who over the years had become my best friend. "Hey, what's going on? My family's disappeared and there's nobody left in town," I asked him. He didn't answer. I stepped forward to face him, and discovered to my horror that his face and expression were detached exactly the same as my parents' in my dream. It couldn't be, was I trapped in a nightmare? I tried to talk to everyone, but they were all in the same state. My head hurt, my eyes hurt. I saw lights, and sounds filled my ears even though there was nothing here. Nothing alive. My vision began to narrow. Sounds began to blend together. Blackness. Emptiness. And finally, words I didn't have time to understand came to me for the last time. "The driver is dead, his head was torn off by the impact."

Go to TwoSentenceHorror r/TwoSentenceHorror 6 hr. ago thelachesis It’s been a few centuries since humanity created an elixir for immortality. Had we known that the earth would run out of resources so soon and leave us roaming around years, starving yet unable to die, none of us would have used it.
