Preparing for an Emergency... March 22, 2013 My friends and I have just recently finished watching a post-apocalyptic show, and it got me thinking. Having lived through 2 tornadoes and three icy storms which knocked out power, I know the importance of being prepared for an emergency. So I have been asking myself, what would any one, not just a homesteader, but any good goth need to be prepared, in case of bad weather, earthquakes or other disasters? Preparedness Checklist: Candles (the 24-72 hour prayer candles work will and come in glass) Oil lamps and oil Matches, Lighter, and Fire Strikers Glow Sticks Flash Lights and Backup Batteries Radio with Backup Batteries Weather Radio with Backup Batteries Sleeping bags Pillows Blankets (Wool and Cotton - for winter and summer) Sturdy Clothing (Wool, Denim, Cotton: lighter color for summer - gray?) Sturdy Work Boots (No heels) Walk shoes or Moccasins Food (enough for at least 72 hours, preferably 1 month - my goal 6 months to 1 year) Coffee and Tea (especially herbal medical teas) Hand Operated Can Opener (only kind my family uses) Water (1-3 gallons per person per day - try to have 72 hrs to 1 weeks supply) Cast Iron Skillets Wooden/Bamboo Kitchen Tools Camp Stove and Fuel Wood Burning Stove (if codes allow...most apartments don't, but some have wood fire places Ax and Saw Fire wood Black Plastic Trash Bags (can be used for multiple things, check Pinterest for more info) Hand Sanitizer (can also be used as fire starter, if run out of that) Large Family Sized First Aid Kit Hygiene Kit (soap, sanitary wipes, combs, nail clippers, deodorant, lotion) Bug Repellent Sewing Kit (needles, thread, buttons, snaps) Eye Glasses Repair Kit I am sure there is more, but that is what I can come up with right now. What would you all add? ~ Morria

Easiest Candle Making Technique Ever! Posted by 💀MV on AUGUST 27, 2011 I love, love, love making candles! It’s one of the funnest and easiest crafts that I know of. I mean, how can you go wrong? Just melt a bit of candle wax, position your wick, add whatever colors or scents you like (crayons and essential oils or even perfume will work just fine), pour the whole thing together, and wait ’til it’s firm. I’ve been making my own candles since the 1990s and just love the entire process. It makes me feel so creative and clever to use up my leftover waxes this way! I also get the added satisfaction of knowing that my candle is unique; no one has quite the same color or scent that I do! That said, pouring candles can be a real pain in the ass if you don’t get it right. The wax can form ugly lumps and bumps, you can find bubbles inside that compromise the burning smoothness, and sometimes the best-laid shapes will go awry. And long, skinny candles — well, forget pouring those! Dipping takes too long (though admittedly, I have not tried it very thoroughly: maybe I’ll do it sometime). If you’re a first-timer or you’re in the market for an easy candle project, you can buy yourself some rolls of beeswax at your local craft store. They also come in candle-making kits that couldn’t be simpler. Place your wick on one side of the wax sheet, roll it up, and Bob’s your uncle. It’s lovely and takes only a few minutes. In the same spirit as the roll-your-own-beeswax candle, I have created a terribly easy candle recipe that would make any star of the most recent episode of “Hoarders” stand and applaud vigorously. 😉 INGREDIENTS: * Something for a wick (natural fiber string, rope, kitchen string, or buy yourself some commercial wick from the craft store.) * One bag of your favorite wax-covered Laughing Cow cheese. (Bonbel and Babybel Light use red wax, and their Cheddar variety is coated in yellow wax.) These candles are romantic and decadent, not at all cheesy! Available in classic Babybel, or Cheddar. Step 1. Eat the cheese as you normally would, storing up all of the awesome wax! Resist the urge to play with the wax… it’s hard, but you need to restrain yourself. Pick the wax apart so that it’s in half-circles or anything flat. Step 2. [If you’re very about germs: wash the wax in cold, slightly soapy water. Soak for a bit, rinse, then allow to air dry undisturbed over the course of a few days. If you don’t care about getting cheese particles in your candle — and trust me, it’s not all that much anyway — read on…] Step 3. Cut your wax into strips and wind it around your wick. After you’ve made a nice long, tall strip, wind more wax strips around your first coat. (It is this step where you can rub a bit of scented oil over your wax strips if you like — I did roses on mine, and now they smell like roses dipped in cheese.) Step 4. Repeat until all of your wax is gone, or your candle is sized and shaped the way you want it. Step 5. Put in a candleholder (or a glass filled with pretty stones, as shown) and light, enjoying the dark romantic ambience of your super-easy craft!

Friday, May 24, 2013 PVC Candle Prop Tutorial This is a tutorial is on how to make fake candles out of PVC pipes. They look great placed next to your NBC/Halloween props, and they are completely safe! You dont have to worry about burning the house down. This is how I Made them: Supplies Needed 1.5" x 2' PVC pipe (One pipe makes 2 or 3 Candles) **To save money, cardboard paper towel rolls can be substituted for the PVC, but they will not be as sturdy, and may be crushed during storage** 1.5" diameter circles/discs cut from pink insulation foam (One for each candle) Battery operated tea light candle for each candle (3 pack/$1.00 @ Dollar tree) Hot glue White spray paint/Acrylic paint Saw Approx Cost: $10 or less Time invested: 1.5 Hours 1. Buy 1.5 inch x 2 feet PVC pipes* ( as many as desired) Cut the PVC into 2,3,4 Pieces. I was able to get 3 Candles of differing heights from one, 2 ft. segment. 1.5" diameter is the perfect diameter for the average tea light to fit perfectly. 2. Cut 1.5" diameter circles or discs out of foam. I used pink insulation foam since I had a ton left over from all my other projects. You can really use anything that will wedge snugly into the PVC pipe and create a shelf for the tea light. You can use expanding "Great Stuff" foam too, but its messy and takes much longer. 3. Buy battery operated tea lights. These are available at many stores, but I found a 3 pack for $1 at Dollar Tree. 4. Dry fit all the pieces together. 5. Once everything is perfectly fit, heat up the hot glue gun! Drip layers of hot glue all over the rim of the PVC pipe, try to simulate melting wax as best you can. You will go through lots of glue sticks during this project. (Dollar Tree sells packs of hot glue sticks! Pick some up while your getting the tea lights). 6. Spray paint the entire candle + hot glue drips white. 7. After the spray pant is completely dry, give it a wash with a mixture of brown/black acrylic paint and water. let it settle in the cracks and discolor the bright white. This will give the candle an aged & antiqued look. Comment if you have any question.... Good luck. Posted by KAM3152 at 1:22 PM
