Provinces
The Appalachian Region is made of 5 provinces of Canada. The 4 major provinces include New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfound land. Sometimes a little bit of Quebec is also included.
Natural Resources
Many of the natural resources found in this region include: mining, aquaculture, forestry, fishing, electricity, pulp and paper, potatoes crops, off shore petroleum,, and fisheries.
Climate
The winters are snowy and often storm while summers are mild and wet with frequent foggy days. The cold Labrador Current, often carrying icebergs, keeps the air around the east coast cool until May. Farther west the winters are colder and the summers are much warmer and less wet. Some areas have moderate temperatures ranging between (-10C and 15C) in the winter and (15C-24C) in the summer.
Influences that affect Climate in the Region
Altitude: Places in Canada that are located at higher altitudes are usually cooler throughout the year. Due to northern and central parts of New Brunswick being more mountainous, they are cooler because they are higher above sea level.
Location to Water: The Appalachian Region is never farther an 200 kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean. This affects the climate of the area. In the winter time the ocean waters are warmer than the land while in summer the waters are cooler than the land. This allows the area to have cooler springs and summers and warmer winters.
Latitude: This region is relatively closer to the equator that the rest of Canada so it tends to be a little warmer.
Natural Resources Shaping Ways of Life
Farming: Many parts of the Appalachian region are mountainous and rocky while others have flat fertile lands. Many of the crops grown in this region include fruits, berries, grain, and potatoes. They are grown mostly in the Annapolis Valley.
Mining: This region has many minerals such as coal, copper, silver, lead, salt, and gypsum. At one time coal was used to create electricity in the area, but now is used to produce electricity because people feel it creates too much pollution.
Forestry: Thick forests were used to create many communities when early settlers arrived. They used the lumber to create furniture, homes, and ships.
Fishing: An important food source for the Appalachian region has been the ocean. The ocean provides food for communities and provides the people with jobs!
What has the government done about it!
Forestry- The provinces in this region have creates laws to ensure that foresters to not harvest too many trees in the area. Many areas are protected to save forest habitats and homes. These protected areas are also used by people to observe nature and to get exercise.
Ocean- The Canadian government have passed many rules stating that international fisherman can not fish within 200 nautical miles of the shore. They also control the number of fish caught in the area. This is to allows enough fish to mature and repopulate the area.
